IUPUI TA Orientation

What is the TA Orientation?

Formerly known as the ETTA Fall Conference, the IUPUI TA Orientation is an all-day event that helps prepare IUPUI graduate students to teach for the first time. Sessions cover a wide range of topics, including, e.g., understanding student privacy issues, using classroom technology, grading, and balancing personal and professional duties.

Who Should Attend and Why?

IUPUI graduate students who will serve in any sort of teaching role, regardless of whether they are the instructor of record, are welcome to attend the TA Orientation. The event is specifically designed for graduate students who are teaching assistants, associate or adjunct instructors, lab assistants, graders, and so on. Instructors with prior training are more confident and more effective in the classroom. By participating in this focused event, IUPUI graduate students new to teaching can better prepare for the experience.

What Happens at the TA Orientation?

The day is organized around whole group sessions and small group (concurrent) sessions. The whole group sessions generally cover topics that are important for all attendees--i.e., campus policies and procedures related to FERPA, sexual harassment, diversity, etc. The small group or concurrent sessions address topics more appropriate to a TA's individual teaching circumstances (planning and delivering an effective lecture or lab, teaching well with technology, etc.). Descriptions of this year's concurrent session presentations are available on this webpage . The Orientation also includes a Resource Fair where TAs can meet representatives from the various units and offices that support graduate and undergraduate student success on campus.
